RHINELANDER – The Palomino Horse Breeders Association has awarded national awards to two palomino horses in Rhinelander. Hazel Rey Lena, a palomino mare, has won the 2008 National High-Point Senior Reining title. Hazel is owned by Sue McCoy, of Rhinelander, and shown by her daughter, Richelle Beene. Richelle also won the National Reserve High-Point in Junior, reining with her palomino gelding, Gatlins Dun It. It was quite exciting when the two beautiful trophies arrived.
The palomino horse that acquires the most points in the nation for that event receives the awards. Richelle rode both horses in their titles.
Hazel also won her Register of Merit award for reining this year and was the 2008 Senior High-point Performance Horse for the Palomino Exhibitors Association of Wisconsin. Gatlins was the Reserve High-point Junior Performance Horse. Richelle rode both horses to their titles.
Hazel is a Doc Bar bred mare, and Gatlin is a Hollywood Dun It gelding. Both horses also do the working cow horse class and sort cattle. They both have a lot of “cow” in their breeding, and both horses enjoy working those classes.
Hazel is now working on her Western pleasure points. She will do her reining pattern, come right down to a nice jog and lope for the pleasure classes. Sue bought her for a pleasure horse, but she sure has taken to the pattern and cow classes for Richelle.
Sue has been showing her Saddlebred pinto pony, Grants Polka Dot, in the halter classes and doing very well at the open and Pinto shows. She has many wins in color and halter and is the 2008 Reserve Champion Pony at Halter for the Wisconsin State Horse Council Champion Challenge. Sue also has been showing Heza Grey Redford at the WSHC shows and won the High-Point Senior Rider in the Western Connection circuit. Sue and “Earl” showed in Western, English, halter and showmanship with a few go-rounds in the pattern classes to collect that win.
