PALMYRA – Not quite a photo finish, but the Lost Ladies team won by three minutes over the Wonabe Appys in a race involving horses, maps, clues and compasses.

Introduction to Competitive Mounted Orienteering drew 14 riders comprising five teams to search for five hidden plates along horse trails in the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest, an event sponsored by the Southern Kettle Moraine Horse Trail Association on July 11.

Pam Talsky, Waterford, representing the sport’s national organization, National Association of Competitive Mounted Orienteering, provided instruction and a sample exercise before the teams set out in timed intervals, following compass directions from two separate points to find each hidden plate.

The results of the Introduction to Competitive Mounted Orienteering are as follows:

• Winning team, finishing in 1 hour and 44 minutes, first choice of prizes – Kris Hansen, West Bend, lead rope; Ruth Ries and Patty Potvin, Kewaskum, fly spray, all donated by Oregon Farm Center; Tracy Discher, West Bend, mane and tail rake, donated by Rae Miller, Palmyra; and Kristine Batinick, West Bend, riding gloves from Winterhorse Park Icelandic Horse Farm, Eagle.

• Second place, finishing in 1:47 – Kim Corcoran, Brooklyn, emergency horse care chart, Wisconsin Equine Clinic, Oconomowoc; Lynn Maertz, Oregon, spray bottle, Gait-Ways LLC; and Kathy Julseth, Stoughton, hoof pick from Rae Miller, Palmyra.

• Third place, finishing in 1:58, finding five plates – Kelly Wojciechowski, Waterford; and Joan Schrank. Rochester, saddle cover from Winterhorse Park Icelandic Horse Farm, Eagle.

• Finishing in 2:02, finding three plates – Sally Ward, Eagle, leather finish; and Joy Smage, Elkhorn, saddle soap, both donated by Winterhorse Park Icelandic Horse Farm, Eagle.

• Finishing in 47 minutes (left for another commitment), finding one plate – Barb Schuldt, Walworth; and Claire Hill, Darien, will claim their prizes later.

In appreciation for her volunteer effort, Talsky chose an emergency horse care chart from Wisconsin Equine Clinic.

The Southern Kettle Moraine Horse Trail Association’s next event is the Great Cookout on Sept. 19.
